Just a few comments... by Alan on Wed May 21, 2003 11:05
Hey guys, I actually had never heard of this song until just today, and I don't see what the problem is. But anyway, I am a very big Silverchair fan, and I personally do want to be Daniel Johns. Okay, not actually, but he is a personal hero of mine. Some things I would like to comment on from what I read in the past responses... 1. You mentioned how stupid the lyric "People dying for no reason at all, makes no difference if you are large or small" is. I think what Daniel was trying to say here is that with war people are killed no matter how young or how old they are. In other words, don't read the song by it's literal meaning. 2. You said that Silverchair fans are idiots, because of all the posts that contained bad grammer/spelling, and I understand that. I hate to break it to you, but it's actually Internet users who are idiots. For the most part. Check almost any message board or guestbook around the internet, and they're full of people with bad english. It's mostly because people are lazy. Anyway, there are very few internet users who are perfect typers. In fact, I'm sure I have made some mistake somewhere in this post already, and if not, I probably will. Hmm, I guess that's all I really wanted to say. Anyways, I don't really understand why everyone is so upset over such a simple song. Everyone is entitled to their opinions. Maybe you should write a song "Don't wanna be(a Silverchair fan)" based on some of these arguments? I personally do think Silverchair have thought-provoking lyrics and I think they are all very talented. But I guess I can also see why other people wouldn't think that, some of their lyrics are pretty simple. But that doesn't matter to me really. Anyway, thought I'd show to you that not all Silverchair fans are complete idiots. -Alan

1. You mentioned how stupid the lyric "People dying for no reason at all, makes no difference if you are large or small" is. I think what Daniel was trying to say here is that with war people are killed no matter how young or how old they are. In other words, don't read the song by it's literal meaning. WE KNOW WHAT IT MEANS!!! By god, we certainly are not decrying it because we don't understand it. we find a lot of things wrong with it, but a big thing is the fact that the "literal" and "figurative" meanings are pretty much the same thing. i can see daniel in his bedroom, writing this song, saying "okay, 'people dying, for no reason at all...' what the hell rhymes with 'all'?? ball..no...stall...i don't even know what that means..small! that's it! i like small! so, how can i fit this into the rhyme scheme, which, might i add, a rhyme scheme is very necessary and i must conform to it!" okay i can't see him saying all of that, but it seems way too obviously a stretch of lazy lines. 2. all internet users are idiots, it's true. we even make fun of ysib supporters with bad grammar. i mean, look at me, i don't even capitalize shit! a big reason we correct grammar and such is because it's an easy way to piss people off. however, when someone incorrectly uses your/you're, or their/they're/there, then they're actually stupid. there lyrics are simple. it's true. a combination of their music, lyrics, and attitude inspired brian to write a song about them some 5-6 years ago. and that's history. i just reply to these things because sometimes i'm bored and click on our messageboard ;)
gotcha by Alan on Thu May 22, 2003 03:42
Yeah I understand what you mean by the rhyming. Now that I think about it it does seem like an obvious rhyming attempt, but I guess when I'm listening to most music I don't pay attention to stuff like that. And I did notice the misuse of their/there, and I just figured you did it deliberately, even without the P.S. Oh, and by the way, I probably wouldn't have posted here had I known all the facts first, you see I didn't read all the message board posts and it turns out a bunch of people already commented on the lyric thing. Also, apparently YSIB is broken up, and you guys don't play outside your town (I think) and a lot of little facts like that that if I had read I probably wouldn't have bothered posting. Oh well, at least this way you can still post here when you're bored. Peace

i don't know if ysib ever really "breaks up." when we started, we were really just four good friends getting together to do something. our goal was never to get big, it was just something to do to pass the time. usually we only played friends' birthday parties, and occasionally we played an actual show. after high school, one of our members went to arizona for school, and another went to UW, which made any sort of "practice" pretty much out-of-the-picture. but it's not like we really break up, because there's always the chance the four of us will be in the same town again someday. consider us "on hiatus" ;)

ps...i was gonna have a ps at the bottom of that and say "by the way, yes i used the wrong form of "their", but i forgot and posted it anyway. now instead of clever i'm just stupid :(
